KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 38 mm, 16.00 g, 1 h), Teos, circa 188-180. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; in field to left, Anakreon of Teos right on chair, playing chelys; in exergue, monogram of ΠY. Price -, cf. 2313-2314 (differing monograms). An apparently unpublished variety of an extremely rare issue, and struck on an exceptionally broad flan. The reverse slightly double struck and with some scratches and horn silver, otherwise, very fine.

Price notes that this is the last issue of Teos, struck in the years after the Treaty of Apameia between the Romans and Antiochos III 'the Great'. Its reverse shows a seated chelys player, who is best identified with the famous lyric poet Anakreon of Teos (circa 575-495/90 BC)
